Everybody Must Get…
After the ploughing, before the broadcast, comes
Spring’s harvest of stones. New England’s cash crop is
banked in ancient walls all around us. Geology’s weeds,
sprouting through winter, ready to stub a toe or
bend a metal blade. This is why they pastured sheep
and cut down the primeval forest. This is why they enlisted
in Grant’s army or became Mormons and moved
out West.
(You dig? You rock!)
The devil’s rooftop is not far down, through this thin
earth. Chipping at it only wakes him up. Gardening is
stealing fire, cool and green, full of trace
elements. So reach down and clear the field, do
your part in sanding down the soil.
